New Year Hike

On Trail Adventures: Rough Tor

Bodmin Moor, Cornwall

Start Your Year On The Tors!

Blow away the cobwebs with our first hike of the new year. We’re heading to the wild, windswept heart of Bodmin Moor to climb Rough Tor (400m), one of Cornwall’s most rugged and iconic tors, before continuing on to Brown Willy (420m), the highest point in Cornwall.

Who This Is For

On Trail Adventures is a community-focused adventure club created to bring together like-minded outdoor enthusiasts for group rides, hikes, and mountain days out. Everyone is welcome to join our community!

Fitness & Skill Level: This is a moderate hill walk of roughly 5–6 miles (8–9 km) with a couple of steady climbs and rocky scrambling-style sections near the summits. Beyond Rough Tor there are no clear waymarked paths, and the moor can be boggy underfoot, especially in winter. You’ll need sturdy waterproof boots, a reasonable level of hill fitness, and to be comfortable walking on rough, uneven ground in cold, wet and windy conditions.

Please note: This is a free, unguided club meetup—not a commercial, coached, or guided tour. Every walker is responsible for their own safety, equipment, navigation, and insurance.

About The Route: Rough Tor & Brown Willy Circular

Starting from the Rough Tor car park, a short climb takes us up onto the granite ridge of Rough Tor, with the twin summits of Rough Tor and Little Rough Tor and the weathered stacks of Showery Tor just to the north. From the top, the views stretch across the whole of Bodmin Moor and, on a clear day, out to the north Cornish coast.

From there we drop down, cross the De Lank River and climb Brown Willy, the highest point in Cornwall, before looping back across the open moor to the car park. Expect a rewarding half-day out (approx. 3.5–4.5 hours including stops) with wild ponies, big skies and a landscape that feels a long way from anywhere.

Along the way: Rough Tor’s summit is ringed by a Neolithic tor enclosure and the remains of a medieval hilltop chapel, the slopes are scattered with Bronze Age hut circles and cairns, and a memorial to the men of the 43rd (Wessex) Division stands below the tor.
